Call for proposals for naming RIKEN’s new "AI for Science" supercomputer
The Advanced General Intelligence for Science Program (AGIS), Transformative Research Innovation Platform of RIKEN platforms (TRIP) Headquarters[1], and RIKEN Center for Computational Science (R-CCS)[2] are jointly developing a new "AI for Science Development Supercomputer," slated for operational launch in April 2026. We are inviting the public to submit name proposals for this new system.
Submission Deadline
5:00 PM, Monday, December 22, 2025 (JST). We look forward to your creative submissions.
About the "AI for Science Development Supercomputer"
- Purpose: Developed specifically for scientific research utilizing AI, this system is optimized for high-speed AI training and inference.
- Performance: Capable of "exaflops-class" performance—executing over 10¹⁸ (1 quintillion) operations per second.
- Synergy with Fugaku: While the currently operational supercomputer "Fugaku" excels at high-parameter simulations (such as typhoon prediction or materials discovery), this new system will integrate with Fugaku to enable complex research that combines AI with simulation—a feat previously considered challenging.
Naming Criteria
We are looking for a name that:
- 1. Conveys that the supercomputer is used for research that benefits society.
- 2. Is familiar and appealing to people in Japan and around the world.
- 3. Contains or evokes an element related to "science."
- 4. Evokes the image of AI assisting scientists in their research.
Application Guidelines
- 1. Eligibility: Open to everyone. Multiple submissions per person are permitted.
- 2. Submission Deadline: Dec 22, 2025 (5:00 PM).
