RIKEN SPring-8 Center (RSC)

The RIKEN SPring-8 Center (RSC) ensures the stable and reliable operation of SPring-8 and SACLA, providing world-leading, high-brilliance X-rays to a broad range of users across academia, research institutes, and industry to foster outstanding research outcomes. In addition, the RSC promotes the strategic utilization of both facilities to address diverse societal challenges.
To fully unlock the potential of the facilities, the RSC advances research and development on core technologies—including light sources, optics, detectors, and control/data processing systems—as well as novel measurement methodologies. Furthermore, regarding the high-quality, large-scale data generated by these facilities as a strategic resource, the RSC collaborates with computing resources and AI research groups inside and outside RIKEN to generate new value.
Currently, the RSC is driving the "SPring-8-II" upgrade project to transform SPring-8 into a 4th generation synchrotron source, with user operations scheduled to begin in FY2029.
