On March 27, RIKEN took a stake in SAIMEMORY Corp. (“SAIMEMORY”) under a program that allows it to invest into companies that will be working to commercialize research and development outcomes from RIKEN.
SAIMEMORY was established by SoftBank Corp. in 2024. It carries out research and development toward the practical application of Z-Angle Memory (ZAM), a next-generation memory technology characterized by high capacity, high bandwidth, and low power consumption.
During the development of the K and Fugaku supercomputers, RIKEN has made achievements in the development of design technologies for workloads suited to memory architectures and environments for evaluating such technologies. Leveraging these achievements and its accumulated expertise in computer science, RIKEN plans to design and develop a performance evaluation system for ZAM through joint research with SAIMEMORY.
Further, a research and development project for next-generation memory technology titled “Development of High-Density, High bandwidth, Low-Power ZAM (Z-Angle Memory),” jointly proposed by SAIMEMORY and Intel Corporation, was selected as part of a call for proposals issued by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), an organization under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, for the Development of manufacturing technologies for advanced semiconductors item in the Post-5G Information and Communication System Infrastructure Enhancement R&D Project —specifically the development theme “Development of Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology (Subsidy) .” RIKEN will participate in this project as a joint research institution with SAIMEMORY.
Through its investment in SAIMEMORY, RIKEN will support the development and practical application of next-generation memory technologies utilizing RIKEN’s R&D achievements, while contributing to the simultaneous improvement of high-capacity, high-bandwidth data processing performance and reduction of power consumption.
