Employee Benefits

We value the well-being of every employee and are committed to providing a supportive and rewarding work environment. This page outlines the employee benefits available to you, including social and labor insurance, various allowances, paid vacation, and leave programs designed to support your life at RIKEN.

Health insurance and other services

RIKEN is a member of the Science and Technology Health Insurance Society, and its benefits are better than the Japanese national health insurance. The health insurance provides coverage for all medical care services necessary to treat illness and injury, including dental and eyes. The health insurance pays 70% of the total medical cost, and so your charge will only be 30%. For more information, go to the Science and Technology Health Insurance.

Password is required for access, please check with your RIKEN laboratory.

Social and labor insurance

There are five types of insurance, and all are subject to mandatory enrollment as a RIKEN employee.

Allowances

  • Commuting allowance
The actual commuting cost is provided and is calculated based on the most reasonable and least costly route up to 55,000 yen per month. This is only applicable if the distance from your place of residence to RIKEN is 2 km or more.
  • Housing allowance
An allowance is provided to employees living off campus in non-owned/rented housing. Half of the monthly rent up to a maximum of 40,000 yen for a single unit, and 60,000 yen for a family unit. To be eligible your name must be on the lease as a signee. If you share with friends or fiancé/fiancée, it must be a joint contract.

Note: Both allowances (commuting and housing) are calculated and paid based on the existing situation on the 1st of each month.

Vacation and leave

RIKEN employees enjoy the benefit of a generous vacation and leave package. Employees are encouraged to use their full quota of leave every year, and to make every effort to maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Check out the Vacation and Leave page for details.

Note: A RIKEN employee is defined as working full time or 28 hours or more each week. Excluded are those working for less than 28 hours each week, short-term (less than 2 months), and part-time workers.
