Seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher or Research Scientist (25-2419)

Laboratory

Strong Correlation Quantum Phase RIKEN ECL Research Unit (to be established on April 1, 2026)
RIKEN Center for Emergent Matter Science
(Laboratory Head: Rina Tazai)

Outline of Laboratory

Our laboratory conducts theoretical research on strongly correlated electron systems in solid-state materials such as superconductors and magnets. Condensed matter physics has historically advanced through close collaboration between theory and experiment. With recent progress in high-precision experimental techniques and faster computational methods, previously inaccessible phenomena are now being uncovered. Starting from microscopic theoretical models that describe individual electron behavior, our aim is to propose novel electronic phases, quantum phase transitions, and transport phenomena, thereby contributing to the deeper understanding of condensed matter systems and bridging theory with experiment.

Job Title and Job Description

Job Title

Postdoctoral Researcher or Research Scientist: 1 position

In principle, a Postdoctoral Researcher is defined as those with a doctoral degree of less than 5 years, and a Research Scientist is defined as those with a doctoral degree of 5 years or more.

Job Description

The successful candidate will conduct research on strongly correlated quantum materials through the development and application of numerical and analytical many-body calculation methods (including programming) for metals, superconductors, and magnetic materials.

The job description may be changed during the contract period or upon contract renewal to the extent described above.

Qualification

  • The candidate should possess a doctoral degree in physics or be expected to obtain one by the start date.
  • The candidate should have research experience in condensed matter theory.
  • The candidate should possess strong communication skills and be able to work collaboratively with both internal and external colleagues. A proactive, cooperative, and flexible approach to research and workplace responsibilities is essential.
  • In principle, priority will be given to those applying for a Postdoctoral Researcher position

Work Location

Strong Correlation Quantum Phase RIKEN ECL Research Unit, RIKEN Center for Emergent Matter Science (2-1 Hirosawa, Wako, Saitama 351-0198)

RIKEN may order the employee to change work locations, if necessary.

  • 1.A one-year fixed-term of employment contract, renewable based on evaluation, up to a maximum of 5 years of employment.
  • 2.RIKEN may adjust the above maximum period of renewability based on a) the employee’s abilities, work load at the time of contract completion, performance and work attitude and b) the continuation of the employee’s center, laboratory or project and RIKEN’s management situation and budget at the time. In principle, employment contracts will not be renewed for individuals older than 70 years.

In principle, the first two months of employment are considered a trial period.

Salary will be an annual salary based on experience, ability, and performance, and will consist of a base salary and a variable salary. The variable salary will be determined each fiscal year based on experience, ability, and performance. Discretionary work, commuting, and housing allowances will be applied.
The approximate amount of salary at the time of employment:
The total amount of monthly discretionary work allowance and monthly salary at the time of employment will be 368,090 JPY or more for Postdoctoral Researchers and 432,000 JPY or more for Research Scientists.
