Fifteenth Global Summit of Research Institute Leaders
On October 3, leaders from 33 public research institutes from around the globe gathered in the historical city of Kyoto for the 15th Global Summit of Research Institute Leaders (RIL). The RIL is held annually as a satellite event of the STS forum.
This year's theme was "Integrity and openness of AI." Following two initial presentations on the summit theme by Director General Bernard Magenhann of the EU's Joint Research Centre of the European Commission (JRC) and Lab Director Katherine Yelick of the United States' Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), the other participants presented their institutes' efforts and their thoughts on the theme. The participants concluded by adopting a Joint Statement summarizing the discussions. The summit was hosted by RIKEN and the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), was co-chaired by President Makoto Gonokami of RIKEN and President Martin Keller of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres, and was moderated by former Swedish Ambassador to Japan and RIKEN Advisor, Stefan Noreen.
