RIKEN Center for Advanced Photonics (RAP)
 Director: Koichiro Tanaka (D.Sc.)
RIKEN Center for Advanced Photonics (RAP) is at the forefront of photonics research, paving the way for extraordinary breakthroughs in the observation, analysis and information capabilities of light.
We are driving cutting-edge research that opens new frontiers in various scientific fields. Light, that most familiar and intriguing of phenomena, has been and continues to be, the most powerful tool in our quest to explore and understand the world around us. The groundbreaking discovery that light is a quantum, known as a “photon”, has led to the remarkable development of quantum physics and has formed the very foundation of modern society. At RAP, we are on a mission to unlock the boundless potential of light by fostering cutting-edge research across various “edges” of photonics. We are developing state-of-the-art photonics, including ultrahigh-precision optical lattice clocks and attosecond lasers, photonics in interdisciplinary research areas exploring fundamental questions of life science and space, and photonics that seamlessly integrates artificial intelligence to bridge the virtual and physical worlds.
We are delighted to have the opportunity to work together to build a new optical age and share our dreams of new developments in photonics science.
